EV adoption in the western states is accelerating, reshaping the transportation and energy landscapes. California, a global leader in climate policy, has set a bold target of 100% zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) sales for all new cars and light-duty trucks by 2035. Washington and Oregon are following similar paths. While these ambitious targets demonstrate the region's commitment to a sustainable future, they also present significant challenges.

The western region’s electrical grid is increasingly strained, with frequent disruptions complicating the development of resilient EV charging infrastructure. The mix of remote areas and densely populated urban centers adds further complexity, making equitable access to charging a challenge. Ensuring charging stations in underserved communities and addressing infrastructure needs in multi-family housing units are particularly daunting tasks. Additionally, the high costs of expanding infrastructure, supply chain issues, and the need for standardized technology complicate efforts to scale EV charging networks.

As EV adoption surges in the Western region, these realities highlight the urgent need for innovative, scalable, and equitable solutions to meet the region’s clean transportation goals. To address these challenges and explore solutions for building the needed charging infrastructure in the western states, Global Transmission Report is organizing its 4th annual conference on EV Charging Infrastructure West on January 23-24, 2025 in San Francisco.
