Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure.jpeg Nashville Department of Transportation & Multimodal Infrastructure
A department focused solely on transportation was a priority for Mayor Cooper during his 2019 campaign and was again recommended in the Metro Nashville Transportation Plan, adopted in late 2020 by Metro Council. The department recently received significant funding increases in both the 2021-2022 capital and operating budgets, with over $120 million in transportation related capital funding, and 42 additional positions added. With many cities moving toward independent local transportation departments, the advantages are clear: efficiency, sustained focus, and accountability. As Nashville continues to grow, building out a 21st century multimodal transportation network that prioritizes safety and equity will be key to maintaining quality of life for Nashville residents, and a department dedicated to these issues is essential to carrying out this vision.

DDP logo color.jpg Designing Central Bank Digital Currencies
This paper studies the optimal design of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) in an environment where agents sort into cash, CBDC and bank deposits according to their preferences over anonymity and security; and where network effects make the convenience of payment instruments dependent on the number of their users. CBDC can be designed with attributes similar to cash or deposits, and can be interest-bearing: a CBDC that closely competes with deposits depresses bank credit and output, while a cash-like CBDC may lead to the disappearance of cash. Then, the optimal CBDC design trades off bank intermediation against the social value of maintaining diverse payment instruments. When network effects matter, an interest-bearing CBDC alleviates the central bank's tradeoff.

EPI-SCC200.jpg European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities
The smart city concept goes beyond the use of ICT for better resource use and less emissions. It means smarter urban transport networks, upgraded water supply and waste disposal facilities, and more efficient ways to light and heat buildings. And it also encompasses a more interactive and responsive city administration, safer public spaces and meeting the needs of an ageing population.

To speed up the deployment of these solutions, the European Commission has initiated the European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities that will bring together European cities, industry leaders, and representatives of civil society to smarten up Europe's urban areas.
